What IsMobile Number Portability?

Mobile Number Portability is a service where users can transfer their numbers from one mobile provider to another.

This allows the users to keep their phone numbers when switching service providers.

MNP applies to personal and business mobile numbers as well as virtual phone numbers and even landlines.

Under the law, users have the legal right to port their mobile numbers across providers for free and as many times as they want.

How Does MNP Work?

1. Porting Request Initiation

The mobile user who wishes to switch providers initiates a porting request with the new phone services provider.

2. Verification and Authorization

The new service provider verifies the user’s identity and ownership of the number.

After the verification, the user authorizes the porting process.

3. Porting Request to Current Operator

The new provider sends a porting request to the current operator, asking to release the user’s mobile number.

4. Coordination with Current Operator

The new mobile operator works with the current one to schedule the phone number transfer.

This includes sharing information about the porting process and confirming the activation date.

5. Location Register Update

On the activation date, the current provider updates its location registers to remove the mapping of the ported phone number from its network.

6. Routing Changes

Routing changes take place in the telecom network.

This ensures that calls and messages to the ported number are transmitted to the new operator’s network.

7. Number Activation

The new mobile operator activates the ported number on its network, allowing the user to access mobile services with their existing phone number.

8. User Notification

Once the porting process is complete, the new provider notifies the user to confirm the activation.

How Consumers Benefit from MNP

1. Retaining Familiar Numbers

The primary benefit of mobile phone number portability is that users can retain the number they've gotten used to.

It eliminates the hassle of having to inform contacts about any change since the number will still be the same.

This seamless transition allows users to maintain continuity in communication.

They won’t have to deal with the potential disruptions and inconvenience of changing mobile numbers.

2. Less Reliance on Network Quality

With mobile portability, consumers won’t need to rely on a single operator’s network quality.

Since they are free to switch providers without changing numbers, users can go for a network that offers better coverage, call quality, and mobile data services.

This gives them the power to prioritize their preferences, making sure they can access reliable and high-quality mobile services.

3. Cost Savings

Cell phone number portability promotes competition among service providers, resulting in better pricing and service plans.

Consumers can take advantage of promotional offers, discounts, and packages.

This leads to potential cost savings.

Being able to switch mobile operators based on pricing and plan preferences allows consumers to reduce their mobile expenses while enjoying a range of options in the market.

You can check all your customers' numbers to determine whether they have been ported using our carrier lookup tool.

How Businesses Benefit from MNP

1. Business Continuity

Mobile number portability enables companies to switch SMS providers without having to change their established business numbers.

This means companies won't need to change their business cards or inform customers, partners, and other contacts about a phone number change.

The ability to keep familiar mobile numbers helps in creating a consistent image for the business.

2. Efficient Branding and Marketing

Businesses invest heavily in marketing materials, advertising campaigns, and branding efforts associated with their phone numbers.

Mobile number portability helps preserve these investments when switching to a new provider.

This eliminates the need for costly rebranding or the creation of new marketing collateral.

3. Scalability and Adaptability

As companies grow or evolve, their communication needs often change.

MNP offers the flexibility to scale text messaging services according to evolving needs.

This means switching to a provider that meets those needs.

Businesses can adapt to new technologies, communication platforms, and mobile operators without the hassle of changing phone numbers.

How to Port a Mobile Number

1. Eligibility Check

To start the porting process, the user makes sure their mobile number is eligible for porting.

In most cases, the user must have completed the minimum required period with their current operator.

They should also have no outstanding balances left.

2. Informing Current Provider

After confirming eligibility, the user informs the current telecom provider that they will be porting out their number and moving to another operator.

The provider doesn’t need to take any action at this stage.

3. Providing Information to New Provider

The user will now have to provide certain information and documents to the new mobile operator.

These include the user’s name, billing address, type of number, the telephone number itself, and letter of authorization.

4. Porting Approval Notification

Once the port is complete, the previous provider can cancel the service.

The new mobile operator will then notify the user, confirming that the number is active on the new network.
